Copy/Paste a title without altering it

First, thank you for your help. Second, holding option and dragging does not work for the nested portion of the animated title. It successfully copies it but when I edit the title in the nested animation, it also changes the original. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you.

Titling seems very awkward to me in Premiere altogether. I finally figured out the whole duplicating titles thing, but recently realized that when I update titles in a cut (subtitles for a doc), the changes are also applied to all my previous sequences / earlier versions of the cut, which is problematic. Is there any way to circumvent this?

When you create a New Title, it appears in the Project Bin as an asset, no different than a video clip, audio clip, or still image. If you have used that same specific title in multiple sequences (or several spots within a single sequence) in the same project – then any change to that specific title will change that title globally everywhere it is used in the Project.

Say you have a .jpg image used in your project in a few different places. You close Premiere, open the .jpg in Photoshop and make changes to it, and SAVE using same name. Then re-open Premiere and of course those changes will be reflected wherever that .jpg was used. I would not expect Titles to act any differently. This is normal behavior for an NLE.

As described earlier in this thread, if you want to change a title without affecting other uses of it in your project, do this –

Say you have Title 1 on timeline. Double-click the title in the timeline sequence to open Titler. Click “T” button at upper left of Titler window, to create New Title Based on Current. This will create a New Title, “Title 2” or whatever you name it. Now, any changes you make in the Titler are not affecting Title 1, only the copy Title 2 version.

When changes are complete, go back to timeline and right-click Title 1 and select Replace with Clip > From Bin. Since you had just created Title 2, it would be currently highlighted in Project Bin and therefore Title 2 is used to replace Title 1. This has NO effect on Title 1, or any other uses of it in any Sequence, you are just replacing/updating the selected title.

In practice, this is VERY quick and easy and works great, and keeps any effects that were previously applied to title before updating. Not sure what could be much easier really.

Just realized I could be confused about your last post. I don’t use Nesting, but if you are using it and change a title in a Nested Sequence, then I imagine that would carry over to another sequence in the nest. But if talking about just having multiple sequences – no nesting involved – then no, changing one should have NO effect on the other.

I’ve spent several hours Googling and watching how-to videos and reading threads here, on Adobe, on Lynda, and on YouTube, just to find out how to duplicate a nested composition (in my case, a 6-layer title with simple animations) and then make changes without affecting the original. One person claimed that right-clicking the nest in the Premiere project and selecting Duplicate would create a dupe that would not link back to the original, but I have found that to be false.

I don’t want to have to re-create each title composition from scratch for every use of it. I must be missing something, but then, so are all of the videos and threads I’ve studied this afternoon. I can’t be the only person who needs to copy (or duplicate) an edited chunk and then make some changes to it when I use it elsewhere, without affecting the first instance of it.

I’ll report back when I figure this out.
