I’m having one of those “I know the answer to this, but I can’t seem to figure it out” moments this morning and so I figure the Cow could set my brain straight.

I’m trying to copy a transition from one juncture of two clips to another and when I do (option dragging), the copied transition is 30 frames, not the 8 frames of the clip I had dragged it from. Does this method of copying a transition revert to the default timing of the transition? Does it not copy both the transition and the length of the transition? Do I need to go into the effects tab and change the default transition time when I plan on copying transitions in the sequence?

And if this is not the case, is there a preference or setting where I can tell FCP to copy both transition and transition length, vs. one or the other?

    Hope this makes sense,

    Steve

Option-drag doesn’t work with transitions. Select the transition, apple-c to copy. Select the next edit, apple-v to paste. You can also right click or control click for the contextual menus.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

I usually right click (control click) and choose copy. Then click on the spot where you what to paste and right click (control click) and choose paste.

    Just like you remember it…
    maybe better.

    Huh?

I’ve been option/dragging transitions to copy for years and it always works for me, same length, parameters, everything. Only reason the length would change is if there’s not enough handles.

    Have a wonderful day.

thanks for making me feel less crazy. I do it all the time, but for some reason, it sometimes won’t bring the length with it. I first thought it was handles related, but it’s making the transition LONGER, not shorter, so that’s not the issue. Very strange. And it doesn’t happen every time. Just enough to make me nutty.

That’s why I thought it had to do with the length of the default. But that’s not it either. Maybe a preference trashing will fix it.

    thanks,

    Steve
