Copying Files

My guess (and it is just that, a guess) is that the terminology is similar to that at the OS level. It did what you asked—it copied the files, it did not MOVE the files. It if you’re looking for is to move them and reference the new location, which I think you’re looking for, then maybe it’s copy, like you did, and then UPDATE LOCATION. A caution: I know that when move the originals the proxies don’t move or copy. When I do what you’re doing I have to go in and move the proxy files at the OS level. I’ve been using ChronoSync to copy and move files because it does verification. It’s much less fun when a file becomes damaged during a move.

+1 for ChronoSync. And yes, the ‘Copy’ and ‘Move’ terminology isn’t quite as literal as you would expect. Matt Stamos at JB&A explained this to me the other day, if I recall correctly, Move is a Move only if it’s within different directories of the same volume, otherwise it’s a Copy, but with the option to Update Media Locations…I maybe a little off in my explanation, hopefully Matt or someone else from CatDV can chime in here and clarify.

Hey Caspian thanks for chiming in and nice to hear from you again. Matter of fact I’m copying my files to my Xtarget server. Anyway, This issue seems to be inconsistent. I don’t MOVE but COPY, update clips to refer to the new copy and replace. Now sometimes this works and the media path refers to the new location or it simply doesn’t copy or does copy but the media path refers to the previous location. Which is quite frustrating when you’re not sure if the files have copied or not. I’m realizing I should have just copied my entire hard drive to the server and just pointed the media path to it. I thought this would be the “right” way to do things. Thanks for your input.

I gotta put in a pitch for placing and never moving your files, if possible. We try to get a place for them on the shared storage and not muck with them much.

The Worker is more reliable about moves as well.

Keep us posted but what’s the purpose of the Copy vs. Move? If you’re worried about data loss, make a non-CatDV backup copy and then just move them.

All of your storage is backed up nightly, right? 😉 (I shudder to think of all of the non-secured video data in the world.)

I agree about Caspian, it’s good to have you piping up and nice to hear Xtarget on the board!

Do you have several clips referring to the same file (eg. subclips)? Perhaps you’re not selecting all the clips that refer to the copied file, or maybe it’s only updating the media path of the first one?
