  • copying and pasting all markers from a clip?

Posted by Aaron Metchik on March 20, 2008 at 5:49 am

I am editing a feature that was shot with two camera’s often running simultaneously. I am not using the multi-clip function. I do have quite a few very long clips and throughout the clips I lay markers to denote events or certain dialogue. Often, I have clips that go on for 10-15 minutes and have about 50 marks in them.

When I open the clip of the same take from the second camera, I find myself adding all of the same marks again manually. It occurred to me that if there were a way to lift all the marks from the clip taken with the A camera and plop them down onto the clip shot by the B camera, as long as the first mark lined up correctly, all of the others would too and over the course of this entire project, that could save me a lot of time.

Does anyone know if that is possible?

    Thanks for any insight.

    Hi, Aaron.

the funny thing is that even if you were using Multiclips,
you;d have to do the same thing you are ding right now.
    why?
    because Multiclips dont hold markers.
you have to add markers to one angle,
then copy the markers to the other angle,
    THEN make the multiclip.

so this is a long way round to saying that yes, i know where you’re coming from, as i’ve had to deal with it myself.
and the best thing you can do is use a Macro app, like Quickeys. (there are other ones out there, but QuicKeys is the one i know)

ther are tow ways to do it, but both invlove getting teh clips in sync first, of course.

method one is the simplest, and you can do this wthout a Macro app,
(but believe me: on a feature, you’ll never regret getting into those macros!)

lay the clips out in a timeline, in sync with each other, on V1 & V2.
    select all,
    then:
Shift + Right Arrow (move to next marker: will move to the marker on the marked clip)
m (Add marker: a marker will be addd to the un-marked clip)

    repeat ad-infinitum

    Shift Right Arrow,
    m;
    Shift Right Arrow,
    m;
    etc.

when you are done its the clip in the TIMELINE that has the markers,
so you have to drag it back into the Browser, and get rid of the Browser version.

the other way is to have one clip in the timeline,
    the other in the viewer,
    and have them ganged.
then you do a little keyboard dance that really would be better handled by a macro.
this way, the browser version is marked.

if you have named the markers, then a Macro app is indispensable.

if you want i can send you the marker-copying macros i created for the feat i worked on.

    cheers,
    nick

    Hi Nick,

Thanks so much for your response. I can imagine how both of those techniques work although I agree with you that they are unfortunately each a bit inconvenient, so I am very excited to hear that there are macros available with make it possible to copy and past markers more easily, especially since, as it turns out, I do name all of my markers. .

I am a little embarrassed to admit though, that I am not familiar with what a “macro” is.

I would definitely be interested in the one you offered to send me (Is this the same one you mentioned in the beginning of your email?) and if you wouldn’t mind, if you could give me a basic lesson on how to use it to copy and past markers from one clip to another using the macro, and if it’s necessary, how to install and begin to use a “macro” in the first place, I would be very thankful.

I have only been editing for about six months. I’m learning new things everyday and it sounds like this could have a very positive impact on my workflow. Thanks again for the options you’ve already given to me, and I look forward to hearing from you again.

    Hi, Aaron.

a Macro is a string of actions, like keyboard shortcuts, that are recorded and that can be triggered with just one keyboard command.

so instad of doing the same boring keystrokes over and over again, you get an application to to them for you.
the one i suggested was QuicKeys
    https://www.startly.com/products/quickeys.html

i think there’s a 30 day free trial peroid, but for the time it can save you it’s very affordable.

it’s actually pretty easy, but will of course take you some time to get started.
the supplied documentation will help better than my garbled descriptions

one trick to programing macros in quickkeys is adding “pauses” between certain programmed shortcuts. otherwise they go faster than FCP can cope, and it misses the signal.

but you dont have to program, just file > import shortcut, and load the one i can send you.

have a look at it in QuicKeys at you’ll see how it works

the shift down arrow & macro i made wil repeat a certain amount of times defined by the user.

if you give me your e-mail, i’ll send it.
i htkn my e-mail i in my profile?
    otherwise

(and to be clear you cant copy or pstae markers, which is whay yuo have to go to such lenths to do what you need)

Oh, okay. I think I see what you mean. I will read the link you sent me and maybe that will help as well.

My email address is AaronMetchik@aol.com. Thanks again. I might write you again after I try to use it if I can’t figure it out 🙂

no, you cant copy & paste markers, sorry.

however, since FCP7, you can ad markers to a multiclip and they will stay.
