  • Copy Timeline clips to Event in different Library?

Posted by Bill Rabkin on October 27, 2018 at 9:44 pm

I completed a project that contained several text clips in the Intro, another several text clips in the Credits, and some custom Lower Thirds. Now I find myself with a new effort in which I could re-use these clips with newly-recorded content between Intro and Credits, and I expect to have several more in coming months. I’d like to put these Intro, Credits, and L3rds into a new “FOR REUSE” Library, from which I can copy them into any new Library in the future and change the text for the new work.

However, since I placed these title clips into my original Project from the Title Browser, they were never in an Event in the original library. I cannot find a way to copy them from the Timeline to my new FOR REUSE library. How can I accomplish that…or is there a better way to preserve reusable clips in a Library from which they can be copied into any new Library for re-use?

Please Note: I can’t (re-) create these in Motion, which I realize would make them available throughout my FCPX work. For purposes of this discussion, assume that I use any of several iMac computers at our local Public Access Media Center, which does not allow user-generated templates to be added into its Motion Templates folders. Thus, I need a “portable” solution that I can carry with me on an external hard drive or USB stick.

    Thanks,
    Bill

Reading your post, I’m not 100% sure I understand what you’ve created but I create and reuse titles all the time and do exactly what you’re trying to do – have a library of reusable elements . I’ve never had an issue simply copying and pasting anything, titles included, from a timeline in one library to a timeline in another.

I’m trying to imagine what’s different about the ones you’re creating…

Thanks, Jeff. I do maintain several “REUSE” libraries for different types of projects that I do on a regular basis. The problem with my current one is that I thought it was a “one-time” need, so I didn’t set up a REUSE library…I just inserted the Titles directly in the Timeline as I built the Project. I should have planned ahead, but I did not.

So now I have a Timeline with Titles that I want to use in other, future work. Of course, I could simply copy the title clips from the original project and paste them into the new project, and do this each time the client wants another one. But I’d prefer not to open a Library with a one-hour timeline simply to copy the Intro, Credits, and L3rd clips.

    Hi Bill,

still a little lost because that’s exactly how I usually get to my reuse libraries. I edit the first project, then if I decide I need to keep titles, etc for another day, I simply create a new library, then copy and past the titles onto a timeline there for safe keeping… then I simply copy that timeline, along with the titles, etc on it, over to my new library for the next project.

How are you setting up a library reusable elements that works differently to that? I may not be helping but there’s a chance I might earn something ☺

So open your Reuse library that you carry around, and paste them into a timeline there. You cannot put titles into an event or keyword collection if that’s what you’re getting at.
