Is there anything like a plugin that will let me tunnel or cache pixel data from one place in the layer or effects stack, and instance it in another place?

I’m imagining a two-part effect, a “copy” effect and a “paste” effect. The copy effect would take the current RGBA image wherever it’s placed, and the paste effect would add that RGBA image in wherever it’s placed.

Like a pick-whip link, but for pixel data.

This would be super handy when working on effects that needs to be applied to multiple titles or shots, because you could mostly avoid having any precomps that need to be duplicated and replaced. In theory you could create an entire AE project in a single precomp.

Not that I know of, but depending on what you want to accomplish, you might be able to build this with Essential Graphics precomps, adjustment layers, and the Collapse Transformations switch.

Is there a specific problem you’re trying to solve?

CC Time Blend Effects offers a Copy/Paste buffer, but it can be very buggy which is why it was removed from the app many years ago. (You can still get them via a workaround though, see Jake’s video for example: )
