    hi

I’ve just been grading a film which goes to a red alert sequence for about 15 minutes (flashing red lights on and off ). The DP really wanted to lighting in the in the flash ‘off’ moment to remain true so just throwing red at these scenes wasn’t an option. So I had to 2 memories saved for each shot then about every 1/2 would need to add the ‘on’ mem with a dynamic move fwd 12 frames add a dynamic add the ‘off’ mem move fwd 12 frames add a dynamic with the ‘on’ mem etc etc… i’ve done 100’s

Any thoughts on how I could have done this quicker?

What i wanted to do is click drag a marquee round (or click, hold shift, click) on a number of keyframes then Copy and Paste in the keyframe timeline window. And as this is now a feature request being able to select multiple points on a power window using the same method would be great too.

    Thanks
    Mike

Could you have used a key to key out the effects when the original footage was dark?

In any case, before adding the marks, perhaps you could have grades one type of the sequence, so you only have to apply the memory to the alternate sections.

Alternatively, could you have used the scene-detect tool to break up the clip into smaller sections, and then used the grouping. It would probably be best to take this shot out into a new project to grade this way, and then bring it back in into the main project.

Also – in this case, should you be using regular marks, or dynamic marks?

Also – it is possible to select multiple marks, I think you have to hold the Shift key and drag on the timeline area. It is useful to change multiple marks to Dynamic/Marks, etc.

    Thanks for the reply Rohit

I think your suggestions of the key, the scene detect and regular marks all were interesting but ways of approaching an on-off flash. But wouldn’t have worked for me -and I think I wasn’t clear enough in my explanation of the problem – it was a fast dissolve between 2 lighting states over and over that was needed rather than a hard on off of the grade.

The shift drag to select multiple marks is a great thing to know , thanks – It’s just a pity that marks can’t be copied and pasted as this would really increase the usefulness of that feature.

Could you have used the editing functions to split the clips at your transition points then added the 2 frame dissolves on each? Then you’d just add the correct grade to every other shot. An editorial solution instead of a keyframe one.
