  • Copy and Paste Keyframes doesn’t work?

I’m using Premiere Pro CC and I want to copy volume level keyframes from one clip to another. Here’s what the Adobe help site says:

Copy and paste keyframes in the Effect Controls panel
When you paste keyframes into another clip, they appear in the corresponding property in the target clip’s effect in the Effect Controls panel. The earliest keyframe appears at the current time, and the other keyframes follow in relative order. If the target clip is shorter than the source clip, keyframes that occur after the target clip’s Out point are pasted to the clip but don’t appear unless you disable the Pin To Clip option. The keyframes remain selected after pasting, so you can immediately move them in the target clip.

1 – In the Effect Controls panel, click the triangle to expand the effect to reveal its controls and keyframes.
2 – Select one or more keyframes.
    3 – Choose Edit > Copy.
4 – Do one of the following:
    – Move the current-time indicator to where you want the first keyframe to appear and choose Edit > Paste.
    – Select another clip, expand the appropriate property in the Effect Controls panel, move the current-time indicator to where you want the first keyframe to appear, and choose Edit > Paste.

But… that simply doesn’t work. The paste option remains greyed out.

Am I missing something? Does this work for anyone else?

The Adobe instruction refers to duplicating keyframes on the same clip, not from one clip to another.

What happens if you go to the Effects Control Panel on the original clip and select the -property- (volume, motion, etc) and select ‘copy’…and then go to the Effects Control Panel (click in it to give the panel the focus) of the destination clip and paste?

The Adobe instruction very clearly refers to copying and pasting keyframes from one clip to another. The first sentence of the instructions that I quoted is “When you paste keyframes into another clip…”

If you click on the link I provided, it is very clear that you should be able to copy keyframes from one clip and paste them in another within the timeline or within the effect controls panel, however neither works for me.

I did also try to copy the entire property, and while this works for the effect, it doesn’t bring the keyframes.

Did you turn on the keyframe capability on the destination clip property before pasting the keyframes?

I’ve experienced this bug too. It’s happened only when I have effects on either clip. I have to remove all effects from the clips in question, then I can copy and paste keyframes between clips without problem.

I’m using CS6 but the problem appears to be an old one. I saw a post on Creative Cow from 2003 complaining about the same issue.

I had the same problem too. Nothing worked and I just couldn’t get the keyframes to copy from one clip to another. It was on a project where I needed a lot of different clips with the same effect, so adjusting every single one of them separately wasn’t an option.

So this is the workaround that saved me some nerves:

    – Copy the clip with the keyframes that you want to use and paste it again in the project.
    – Right-click – Replace with clip – From bin

It’s not the perfect solution, but it helped me get the work done.

    Cheers,
    Sandra

    GUYS! I think I figured it out…

Copy the entire motion attribute and copy into the other clip.

Worked for my case. Hope this helped!
