I was running out of space on my harddrive so I copied my FCP files to a larger external harddrive. The problem I have now is that all of my captured files are coming up as Unix files and FCP is not recognizing them. Is there anything I can do to get FCP to recognize these files?

    I am working on a dual 2.0 G5, OS 10.4.11, 3.5GB RAM, Maxtor 500GB external drive, FCP 5.0.4.

    Thanks

Sounds like the external drive was not formatted for Mac.

Select one of the files in the finder, hit CMD+I to show info, and change the Open With dropdown to Quicktime (or alternatively you can try Final Cut Pro). Try double clicking and see if the files open and play in Quicktime. Then try them in Final Cut Pro.

    Any help?

The drive is formated for Mac. I have tried changing the “open with” to QuickTime in the “get info” box but FCP is still not recognizing the files. I have even gone so far as to add .mov to the end of the file names. When I do this, they look like QT files, they play fine in QT and FCP sees them but will not use the file to update the missing clips. Any other ideas? Thanks.

I added .mov to the file, changed the opening app. to FCP in the get info box and updated each file individually and now it’s working. It’s a pain to do and very time consuming but I couldn’t get it to recognize the files any other way. Thanks for all the help. If you know of an easier way to accomplish this please let me know.

You could use Automator to change file type and creator quickly:

You need to run DiscWarrior or TechTools pro to repair the Finder Info of the data in your HD.
