  • Converting Uncompressed 10 bit seq. for Firewire drive

    Hello

I am working on some SD Motion tests at work on my FCP 6.0.1 set up on a Power Mac G5 (Dual 2.7 Ghz / 4.5 GB Ram) with a Lacie Firewire Drive. I am having a lot of trouble watching stuff on the timeline – reason being I am guessing is because I have the project and each of the sequences set to Uncompressed 10 bit NTSC 29.97

Originally my animation guy got the live action footage from QT’s which the agency posted on a FTP in Sorrenson 3 format (this is just for a pitch so hi-res is not available yet)
The Designer has given me Tiff sequences (720×540) with title animation motion tests added which i then converted in QT Pro into QT movie files with None Compression 29.97.

For audio I extracted the audio from those same Sorrenson movies and saved as aiff’s – i then put these edits together in FCP with an uncompressed 10 bit setting so of course it wont hardly play back off of my firewire 400 lacie drive.

I have done some research today in order to try and resolve the issue and it seems that working in DV-NTSC, DVC-Pro or HDV would allow me to play things smoothly on a firewire drive but I have already done 5 sequences in this project and want to know what is the best (easiest) way to transfer the sequences i already have and continue to create new sequences in this project as changes come in.

I have the final cut pro documents folder as well as the project itself and the files of course all on my lacie drive and now i just want to know how is best to proceed so i dont have to start all over and rebuild everything. Do I use Compressor or use another method – as you can tell i am new to final cut 6.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated in that this is driving me nuts!

    Thank you

    BK

In sequence settings change the compressor to DV50 and re-render.

ok wow and thats it… it will then be in that setting and i will be able to work. I forgot to mention that the finished quicktimes that i am posting for the agency / client are h.264 480 x 360 so will these look any worse then the ones i have already posted? I guess since everything is coming from small Sorrenson files anyways and not full res or even half res they will look bad regardless – i just was curious about how all that worked and your answer is so simple it almost seem too good to be true : )

In terms of options and quality of image is there anything better or worse i could be using besides what you recommend?

thank you for replying so fast i really appreciate your help – any other opinions / ideas from other people out there?

Choose DVCPro50… In other areas of FCP they call it simply DV50, which is why I used that before.

The reason I chose that for you is that your video will never get any better than it is right now, but DVCPro50 will at least preserve your graphics because it leaves them in 4:2:2 color space, unlike DV which lowers them to 4:1:1 color space.

[BklynHunger] “…you are kick ass my friend”

    And I take no prisoners…

You’re very welcome. BTW, I could have given you a two, three, or even four step method, but I’m kinda fond of those one step does it all solutions.

    Regards,
    David

haha ok i am leaving the office now because its late and the lady is gonna kill me for nerding it out at the office : )

…however i would be curious to know what those other steps / methods are – as I am learning right now as an asst editor every bit of info i can get helps – not enough time and so much to learn. Also, If i were working with hi res live action footage in an uncompressed 10 bit or whatever format wouldn’t i need a raid drive or would i be converting it to pro res or something else (offline) and then when its all done and final approval is there making it hi res / full res and onlining?

I did as you instructed and the rendering was super fast and now everything plays fine, i just don’t know very much so of course there are tons of questions.

ok have a good one and thanks again
