Converting the negative space of a shape layer into its own layer?
Posted by Joe Richardson on February 18, 2019 at 6:01 amI’m trying to use shapes to create mattes. I was hoping there was a way to immediately highlight the negative space that a shape layer makes as its own layer.

I want to be able to make the 1 shape in the middle, and then have access to the left and right space as shapes or masks that I can individually move and use as a matte.

February 19, 2019 at 5:11 pmSomething like, I wanna draw a shape layer of any type, and be able to select the “space” that isn’t a shape layer.
Say if I draw an “X” on my Comp, I want to be able to select the 4 quadrants that make up the empty space in the letter/shape, and use them as mattes.

February 19, 2019 at 5:18 pmOh, just duplicate your shape layer and then, whatever you are trying to add to the negative space, set it to Alpha Matte Inverted below the duplicate shape layer and make sure the duplicate shape layer is hidden (turn off eyeball).
Best regards,

February 19, 2019 at 5:41 pmYes, that works, but I wanted to move the layers behind the negative space to have multiple copies.

In this case, the negative space is one layer, so I guess I can use 1 comp for each “negative”. In this case, I’ll have 4 Comps — one for each blank spot — and then another comp for the middle text.
Thanks!

February 19, 2019 at 7:16 pmYou can have mask paths and shape layer paths follow each other with expressions. So, if you set your mask to follow the shape layer’s path, you could use that.
