    Hello everyone,

    I have been editing a very large project on Premiere CS5 and for reasons of communication I need to convert it into an FCP project now.

    I have exported an XML and I was able to import it into Final Cut. All my sequences are there and even the bins. It looks really good at a first glance. However, I have two issues:

    1. The project was shot on P2 Cards. CS5 is able to work with the P2 file structure natively, so I was just using the media files as I copied them from the cards. FCP however needs to convert (say unwrap) them first into movs. So I have all my bins with all my media files in the FCP project I cannot link nor use them. What I tried now is to simply capture ALL the P2 data, let FCP convert it and put it on a new HD. Then I am able to link them and everything works fine. My question: Is there any more time-efficient way to do this? It is a large project with 100 hours of material, so it will take some time.

    2. Titles. I used CS5 to create titles (that is subtitles) for the project. Those titles were supposed to be transferred via XML as well. However, when I look at my bins in Final Cut, all the titles (there are hundreds of them) have the same name, instead of the names that I gave them in CS5. Other than that, the sheer quantity of them seems to be about right. Anyways, the hundreds of same-name titles have no content whatsoever. However, in the timeline i see all the titles as clips, but they are all linked to the same one faulty title. Any ideas? I am now trying to export *.PRTLs from CS5 and see if I can get them to import into FCP.

    That would be WRAP them into QT files. Take them from the native format and put them in a QT Wrapper.

    Yes…get third party software that allows FCP to deal with the native MXF files. Calibrated and MXF4Mac are good ones. Raylight too.

    I’ve not tried this myself yet but here’s what you could try. Create a preset in the Adobe Media Encoder on the Mac that has both Adobe and Apple products. This preset would batch process all of the MXF files to ProRes .mov files. Once that’s done, you should be able to offline the media in FCP and connect it to the .mov files.

    However, like I said, I haven’t tried this myself. Good luck and let us know if it works.

    Thanks for the heads up on the titles Tobias. I am very interested in the degree of compatibility between FCS and CS5, so it is a pity that titles don’t seem to make the journey at this stage. I wonder about the return trip from FCS to CS5.

    Any more info on XML compatibility between these systems is interesting and important to me as I only finish (grade/ online & sound post) so anything that doesn’t perform as promised in interchange is vital knowledge.

    Yeah, titles and title engines are not very compatible. If you use the basic text tool in FCP, Adobe will give it a go, but honestly, I think we want to focus on getting the clips and their attributes (position, scale, etc.) across more than titles.

    If you’re using Photoshop to create your titles and save as a .png or like in FCP – you could offline the .pngs in Premiere Pro and reconnect them to the original PSDs for further tweaking. Definitely one pro of Premiere in this case is the handling of PSDs in the timeline.

    I have onlined docos with heaps of supers, subtitles and other graphic elements which can take days to redo and check for typos. Conversely I have reloaded media in less than a day on a 52 minute doco so I don’t agree with that priority.

    Let me clarify – I’m with you, but my statement was in the context of priorities. If I had title import that was cleaner but messed up the actual clip import, it wouldn’t be very useful.

    I agree that we have room to improve when it comes to title import. I would love for all that are interested in seeing this (or any Adobe feature) to use this link to make their feature requests – we actually look at and tally them all the time.

    Is it possible to get a Premiere XML with titles (text based) from you so I can have a look at it and can integrate it into my widely used TitleExchange.
