  • Converting *.MTS clips

I filmed a wedding using a Sony FX-7 which generated clips with *.M2T suffix. Long story short but the audio dropped out halfway through the ceremony (batteries went dead without warning on the lapel mic….even though there is a 3-bar battery indicator). Given the distance the onboard mic did not pickup most of the ceremony.

Luckily a family friend was also shooting at close range using a Sony HD camera which has a harddrive storage and hence uses AVCHD and the files are *.MTS which I notice is not supported by Sony Vegas Platinum 8.0.

How can I ‘economically’ convert the MTS files into something that SVP8.0 will recognise? I read somewhere that Vegas Pro recognises MTS but this is not an option for me. I do not want tp purchase software as I will never need the convert again. Suggestions…?

Don’t be so sure. It’s getting harder and harder to find HD cameras that DON’T shoot AVCHD these days. I would seriously consider upgrading to Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 9. You bought a $2,000 camera, a $50 software upgrade seems the quickest path. If the move from Movie Studio 8 to 9 is anything like the move from Vegas 7 to Vegas Pro 8, you will gain significant benefits in working with the HDV from your FX7 as well because Sony has really been improving HD support with every release. I would download the trial of VMSP9 and see if you think it’s worth it. At a minimum you could see if it converts the AVCHD to wave for you. 😉

Valid point. I have had a closer look at Vegas Platinum Pro 8.0 which I currently have, and according to Sony, it should support AVCHD. In the Help Menu, when you search for AVCHD it brings up a topic on how to import the AVCHD format. It refers to the file extensions as being *.m2ts. The files I have are *.mts. Does this matter?

When I try and import the files (which I was given on CD) Vegas freezes. Is this because I need to bring the footage in directly from the videocamera?

The Help topic also says to capture the video via you Picture Motion Browser Utility supplied with your video camera? What is this?

No. Some cameras use the extension .m2ts and some use .mts.

No. It may just be that Movie Studio 8 doesn’t support that form of AVCHD. There are several variations of AVCHD. Did you try Movie Studio Platinum 9 with the files?

It’s a utility that Sony ships with their camcorders. Because the memory sticks and hard drives are formatted for FAT32 they have a 2GB file size limitation. The Picture Motion Browser Utility stitches these files back together to resemble the duration that you really shot. I assume the person who gave you the CD doesn’t have any clips that large to worry about (since a CD is only 700MB)
