  • Converting .mov in Vegas 8 for optimal quality

    Hi all

I’m using a .mov file that keeps crashing DVD Architect 5 everytime I select it. I tried converting the .mov file to .avi in Vegas 8, but the quality is not so grand.

I want to know if there is a better/format/codec/settings I should convert to without quality loss, that DVD Architect will read.

I suspect the .mov file is corrupt and that DVD Architect is tripping up on it, while Vegas is able to ignore it (the .avi I output in Vegas was intact).

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks much!

I want to know if there is a better/format/codec/settings I should convert to without quality loss, that DVD Architect will read.

In Vegas, render the MOV file to MPEG2 using the appropriate DVD Architect video stream template. Then render the audio as Dolby Digital AC3. Use these files in DVD Architect and the quality should be fine.

You could also use FREE script from VASST called DVDPrep and it will prepare your timeline for DVD burning with one click. Just select the options that apply to your video format.

Either way (manual or automated) will make an MPG video and AC3 audio file that’s compatible with DVD Architect. If you give them the same name, DVD Architect will automatically pick up the audio when you drop the video on the menu.

Excellent advice – thanks so much, John!

I will try the script next project. I went with the mpeg2 manual conversion this time and it looks pretty great =)

    Hi John,

This is thread is a bit old, but I had some further questions about the DVDPrep plugin. I have used it in the past for single layer, but only on a couple of occasions. Now I am planning on using it for a dual layer disc.

From what I understand, VASST uses the info in the MPEG2 MainConcept templates to perform the render. So, if I select 2-pass and progressive fields in the DVD Architect templates, VASST will read those and render accordingly.

But how does VASST know whether you are burning to dual or single layer discs?

Also, how does this work with other media that is intended for the same disc? Meaning, if I render out a movie using VASST DVDPrep but then have to add trailers for other movies, menus, galleries and so forth, to the same DVD along with the movie, will DVD architect fit everything to disc?

    Thanks in advance!

No. DVD Prep uses the standard templates. I’m not sure if those can be edited and saved (I’ve never tried). The version of DVD prep that comes with Ultimate S Lite and Ultimate S Pro allow you to select a render template but the free version doesn’t.

[Deirdre O'Lavery] “But how does VASST know whether you are burning to dual or single layer discs?”

It doesn’t need to because it’s not burning anything. It’s just creating a file for DVD Architect. You need to tell DVD Architect that you want to make a dual layer disc.

DVD Prep just prepares your project for dropping into DVD Architect. The rest of all that is done in DVD Architect. DVD Prep just renders the video and audio stream for your movie.
