After converting HDV to H264 using the default settings, I opened the movie through Quicktime and the frame was 4×9 instead of letter box frame of original source. I checked the default settings of H264 in compressor and the frame setting is 1440×1080, the same as the original source. Is this normal?

You don’t say what you want to deliver, or to whom?

Is it for web delivery, IPTV, Broadcast transmission or mobile device?

Just so you know, HDV uses non-square pixels to deliver a 16:9 image so 1440×1080 non-square pixels equals 1920×1080 square pixels.

    1440/1080 = 1.333:1 or 4:3 – Rectangular pixels

    1920/1080 = 1.777:1 or 16:9 – Square pixels

Bottom line is that 1440×1080 is HDV’s way of ‘cheating’ 16:9 Full HD video.
