converting HDV to DVCPRO HD link?
Posted by Paul Nevison on December 11, 2006 at 8:53 pmHi
can someone please point me towards a link that explains the workflow in capturing HDV footage on the fly via a capture card (BMD or AJA) to DVCPRO HD. I have read what Graeme and others have written regarding the compression involved and i fully understand the downside in quality.
I have just been landed with my first HDV project and am pretty happy never to have to cut HDV again! the DVCPRO HD workflow is worth investigating, but I cant find a link or anything in the cow search.
thanks

December 11, 2006 at 9:08 pmWell, for starters you would need to upgarde to a BM Extreme HD card. Your present card is SD. Once you get the proper card, capturing to DVCProHD is as simple as piping your analog video and audio signals out of the HDV deck or camera through your capture card with the proper DVCProHD capture settings.

With AJA it’s very simple. You connect the HDV deck to a Kona board, any Kona HD board. Under Easy Setup choose any Kona DVCPro preset. Start capturing.

yes i know i need to upgrade the card to HD. Do you also need a converter box with the AJA set up?

December 12, 2006 at 12:15 amIf you use the Kona LH card you do not need any other converters. The LH has analog component in and out. If you use the Kona 2 or 3 you will need an analog component to SDI converter since those cards only have SDI for inputs (but they do have analog component out). The big difference between the the Kona 3 and LH is that the Kona 3 will do up, down, and cross conversion. The Kona LH will only do down conversion.
I have been using the Kona LHe in a Mac Pro for 4 months now and find the HDV to DVCproHD workflow to be very satisfactory. Of course your mileage may vary…

December 12, 2006 at 4:11 pmthanks for the info,
when you go the ingest via HD capture card route….do you still experience the weirdness of scrubbing through HDV footage as in the lag in picture and audio and is it possible to monitor the picture and audio on capture using this workflow ie rather than on the camera LCD and headphones?

Yes, you monitor audio / video through the video card during capture and everything is in sync when using the DVCPro HD codec.
There is nothing you can do for the lag in VTR controls though. That’s what I hate about using HDV is that you just can’t get consistent jog/shuttle like you do with professional VTR’s.

December 12, 2006 at 6:43 pmaint that the truth walter!!!
digitizing becomes such a drag with HDV – totally unresponsive….i wasnt really sold on the format to begin with and now my short foray into the world of HDV has confirmed that this is not a great post solution…unfortunately for many budgets it seems its the only option.

I even went so far as to look for an HDV deck with RS-422 but there doesn’t seem to be one. I guess even Sony agrees it’s a consumer format.
