    I originally shot in HD 1440×1080. I have to render out both and HD and and SD file. The HD renders fine. When I convert it to SD and change the video to 4×3 and the project properties to 720×480 the video doesn’t look right. I render out to MP4 at 720×480 and the video on the timeline looks fine. Here is a picture before I render.

    Here is what it looks like after I render.

    Why is there a purple line? Why is the aspect ratio different? What am I doing wrong? Thanks.

    Instead of changing the project properties, just choose the standard definition template that best fits your project (probably DVD Architect Video Template for the video and AC3 for the audio).

    Also, why are you changing it to 4:3 instead of leaving it 16:9? Just curious.

    As for the PAR changing, HD is 1.333 while SD is 1.000 so the aspect ratio is going to change per the spec.

    Thanks Jeremy. You are right about the 1.333 for HD and 1.000 for SD…that threw me off. I have to make the footage available for broadcast TV, and locally most stations are still SD but some are HD, that is why I have to change it…

    Thanks for the help.

    SD will be:

    * 720×480 with a 0.919 PAR
    -or-
    * 640×480 with a 1.0 PAR

    … more or less on the 640×480 part. 720×480 w/1.0 PAR will look distinctly stretched (toss a perfect circle on the timeline and you’ll see it – weight-conscious talent will also notice).

    Eric, are you sure you don’t have those backwards?

    When I rendered 720×480 with a 0.919 PAR it looked stretched in every thing I play it in. I played it back in quicktime and it looked stretched. I put it back on my timeline and it looked stretched. When I rendered out 720×480 with a 1.000 PAR it looked great. Am I missing something?

    Thanks for the help.
