Converting HD footage to 4:3 for broadcast
Hi. I did see some posts on this but I’m still having trouble with this. I need to convert some HD footage for a news broadcast. I don’t want it to be letterboxed or squished. They just need the sides cut off, essentially. Is there any way to do this in Final Cut Pro? Could you give me very basic instructions. I’m pretty new to Final Cut. Thank you so much for any help!!

Now, in my experience – Dave, correct me if I am wrong – it is better to output this timeline (Dave’s workflow) then over compressor, then rendering it out directly over FCP. Compressor seems, at least in my experience to do a better job.
And if you are in the lucky position to do the same workflow with AE – go for that one, it’s a lot better.Sascha

Thank you so much for the responses. I found the perfect solution using compressor. I will post it here in case anyone else has this issue. These are the “baby steps”, so forgive me if it’s too elementary.
1 – Go to File, Export, Using Quicktime Conversion
2 – When the window opens, choose Options
3 – Choose Size
4 – Under Dimensions: Select NTSC 720×480 4:3
5 – Check Preserve Aspect Ratio Using: Crop, (or letterbox)
6 – Hit Ok
7 – Go to Settings to choose qualityIt takes a while to render but works perfectly! The clip looked great on TV!
