  • Converting from H.264 in Final Cut Express 2. Don’t have AIC.

Does anyone know a codec I could use in Final Cut Express that wouldn’t require rendering every clip in the timeline to edit? I don’t have the AIC in my list for some reason, nor any ProRes. I am using MPEG streamclip to do the conversion from Canon 5D footage.

    Thanks for your help.

You can download the AIC codec as well as the ProRes codec online. There are quite a few video tutorials online of how to go about doing that. The best way to get your footage in an edit friendly format is to convert it to AIC (if using an older version of express) or ProRes (if a newer version). This topic has been covered several times on this forum, I know because I joined several weeks ago to find this answer and found it quite quickly by browsing through some of the posts.

The only codecs that work with express are DV, HDV, and the AIC codec… choose one of those. AIC should be there… Got Compressor? That would have the codecs.

    You should have the AIC.
    Prores is from FC.6 up.
The cheapest way to get it is buying Motion.5 from the Appstore (40$).

Thanks. I couldn’t find the AIC download online, only the update. I read posts from others with the same problem. My version of FCE appears to be missing AIC for some reason. Were you able to download the full AIC codec?

    Thanks Jerry,

Looks like I have a DV/DVCPro option on my list. I might try that.

I don’t have compressor and can’t seem to find a version old enough for my system (OSX 10.4.11 PPC). I am in the process of upgrading to a new iMac but in the meantime i’m struggling to edit on the system as is.

    Thanks for your suggestions.

Thanks Dave, I’m starting to think the same thing. I’m in the process of updating my system but hoped to get some editing done in the meantime.

    I appreciate the workflow instructions.

    Shoot…

If you were to reinstall it all, it would work I’ll wager.

If it were me, and it’s been a long time since a clean install from the OS up I’d consider that.

Run in the same versions you’re at on that older machine…

    Thanks again Jerry,

Not sure I’m up to the task. I don’t even have a copy of the OS I’m currently working with. The repair shop loaded it on my last visit when I discovered my PPC G5 is considered a relic. I couldn’t get parts to make the repair needed.

Thanks though. I’ll find a way to hobble along until the new iMacs are released. Any day now I hope!

    Really? you can’t get parts?

    Well…

If your delivery is SD or a web stream, then I think you might just transcode it all DV in your situation. The AIC codec isn’t a great codec BTW. I do believe you can do that with MPEG Streamclip.
