    Hi all –

A client gave me a drive with a .mov file would not open in Vegas 9. I found out that it was shot with a particular camera and that I needed to purchase a special codec to get it to be read in Vegas (the codec is Calibrated Q XD Decode). This has worked, but the files do not play smoothly in Vegas.

I would like to convert them to something more manageable within Vegas 9, but not sure what I should render them out as. I did a test on a 5 second clip rendering out as an .avi using the HD 1080 60i YUV template. The original file is using progressive for field order, so i changed the template to reflect that. The problem is that the rendered 5 second clip ended up being around 500mb or so — a wee bit large!

How should I convert this .mov file to .avi with equal quality and a more manageable size for editing?

The original .mov file has the following specs:

    Format: Calibrated XDCAM-EX 1080p30
    Attributes: 1920x1080x24, 00:02:15;13
    Frame rate: 29.97 (NTSC)
    Field order: None (progressive scan)
    Pixel aspect ratio: 1.0000 (Square)
    Alpha channel: None
    Rotation: 0 degrees
    Stereoscopic 3D mode: Off

Thanks much – been struggling with this for a few hours now and my head is kind of mush.

    Cheers,
    Deirdre

I would use the CineForm codec. You will need to purchase that too. CineForm NeoScene ($99 USD from Videoguys.com) is the best way to do this. If you’re working in HD, you will find 1001 uses for CineForm. It’s one of those tools that solves a multitude of problems because it’s a near lossless digital intermediary codec that stands up well to multiple renders. I use it all the time to go between Vegas Pro and After Effects.

    Hi John,

Thanks for the response. I have downloaded the trial of Cineform NeoScene, but it produces an error that says it will not support the file type.

The original BVAP folders from the client are no longer available, so all he has are the .mov files he converted before deleting the original media. I’m hoping he can re-wrap the future scenes somehow, into a format that is better recognized. I think I read that FCP can re-wrap to .mov to mp4, so perhaps that will work.

For now, unless I find another solution, I may just render out down-converted copies of the clips so I can edit them, then relink to the original for final output.

Create a CineForm template in Vegas Pro and render to CineForm from Vegas. You can use a tool like VASST GearShift to batch convert to CineForm if you have a lot of files.

GearShift will also create proxies for you and then it will swap out the proxies for the HD files before you render if this is the workflow you prefer.

Download the trial of VASST GearShift and see if it fits your needs.

    John,

Thanks for your help. I will look into Gearshift as well as creating the Cineform template.

    Best,

JR, is GearShift compatible with vegas pro 10? I own several vasst products and I really like them.
