  • Converting FC Project sequence to a JPEG 2000 file

Posted by Brad Elliott on September 9, 2009 at 8:36 pm

I have a request to deliver a JPEG 2000 file of video that was edited in Final Cut.

It is my understanding that the JPGEG 2000 file will be to used to make a digital file format used by AMC theater projectors in AMC theaters.

It seems to me that this needs to be done outside of the Final Cut suite. Do anyone have any experience with this or have any suggestions on how to go about this?

    Thanks

    Dave,

    Thanks for your response.

I have played with QT and compressor and have tweaked it to what I consider to be the best for SD. In both instances QT has a hard time playing the high motion footage back without stuttering or interlacing issues.

I presume this codec is similar to animation or uncompressed but I am surprised that that a dual-core Intel G5 isn’t able to play back a 12 second clip. Have you had any or similar experiences with this?

Are they looking for a Digital Cinema Package? If so you won’t be able to do this in FCP. You would need to use a hardware encoder that makes a DCI compliant JP2k MXF stream with surround sound.

Get your delivery spec and find out if it ask for a DCP or mentions the DCI or a DCM. If that’s the case, you’ll need to find a vendor who can make the delivery package for you.

For more information on all this stuff, you can visit the DCI homepage & download the spec.

I have to provide Final Cut edited feature in JPEG 2000 format. I asked twice, if they mean a DCP pacage, but the answer was no! They say, they import the JPEG2000 file into a sever and screen it throufh that!
Can I really tranfer the feature into a JPEG 2000 movie in Final Cut?
    And how???

Just change your sequence codec to Jpeg-2000 and export.

You can export with quicktime conversion and specify JP2k there. Do they want an image sequence or a movie file? I think you can do both, but I’m not near a Mac to check right now.

You are right Arnie, exporting as a still sequence there are some hidden option.
    Somewhere say; “reversible’ (lossless).
I have never explored this interesting codec.
