I would like to make the avi file accessible on the Web. I would like to have the video start playing before the file is fully downloaded and I would like to have file compressed as possible consistent with reasonable display.

Why use an AVI then. An MP4 is a much better bet.

OK, I will try using the mp4 format.
Do you happen to know if qt-faststart will work with MP4 files?
