Converting 720×576 25fps PAL to 23.976 1920×1080
Hi all,
I got some stock footage that is at 25 fps PAL. But I’m working in a project that is mostly 23.976 in 1920×1080. So I need to convert the footage to those specs. I’ve run a couple of tests where I brought one clip into Cinema Tools and conformed it to 24 fps. And then another one, where I’ve brought a duplicate clip into FCP, and conformed it that way. But my question is what is the best way to change the aspect ratio to 1920×1080 since the PAL footage is at 720×576?
I’ve already attempted to use MPEG Streamclip, where I selected “De-interlace” and maintained Pro Res 422 (HQ) but selected 1920×1080, but I’m not sure if that’s the best method.
Any advice/input?

ASPECT RATIO is not dimensions. 4:3…16:9. Those are aspect Ratios. PAL is 16:9…1920×1080 is 16:9…so you are good there. But you need to change the PIXEL DIMENSIONS. You need to upconvert SD to HD. For that you use Compressor. Change the frame size in the Inspector, and then turn on the FRAME CONTROLS, and set them all to BEST. This will take a while.
Or…use a capture card like the AJA Kona 3 to capture the source from tape and upconvert that way. It’s real time, and real good!

To answer your questions, Dave: the footage is 16×9 at 720×576. And secondly, I still want to look good. But yeah, I understand that enlarging it would change the quality. Do you recommend anything that would give me a good balance?

In Compressor, should I maintain the pixel aspect, PAL CCIR 601, or would it be better to change it to what most of my footage is in the project?

Change pixel aspect ratio to square pixels.
Compressor can also do the 25 to 23.98 conversion at the same time. Just make sure you set your Video settings to 23.98 in the Encoder Tab, and Rate Conversion to ‘Best’ in the Frame Controls tab.
