Converting 720p to 1080i!?!

This is very easy. I too have footage shot at 720p24 24PN and we have a deliverable of 1080p at 23.98. All you have to do is first make sure you have the AJA or Decklink codecs…whichever the post facility is using (both downloadable from the websites) and then copy your sequence, create a new project with the timeline settings you need and paste the sequence into it. Then resize it (MODIFY menu, SCALE TO SEQUENCE) and then render. The software upconvert is really quite good.

Im still a little confused unfortunately. However, it has more to do with me needing to find out exactly which specs the post house needs my timeline to be in for me to go out 1080i (D5). I am assuming right now it will be the HDTV 1080i codec as in is the only 1080i option. and the 10 bit blackmagic compressor.

When I paste the sequence into the timeline. Is there a way to “scale to sequence” the entire sequence or do you have to do each clip individually?

The 1200A can do the cross convert via HD-SDI into the deck.

Or, better yet, the Post house should have a Kona 3 which can do the cross convert on the way out to the D5. You just stay in your 720p timeline until output. I’m surprised the D5 can’t lay out to 720.

Much better to the do the 720 to 1080i cross convert via hardware than upscaling in FCP. The Kona 3 is just perfect at this.

First off you really need to be talking to the post house and get the info about what they need from them.

Second, if you to the upconvert and need to scale to sequence, for some reason it doesn’t like when you have transitions selected. So you have to highlight the clips without highlighting the transitions…maybe in groups. I have mapped the SCALE TO SEQUENCE to an F-key so it goes pretty fast.

Walter is right. If you are simply outputting to tape for a tape-to-tape color correct, using the Kona card to upconvert the footage on the fly on output to D5 would be your best bet. We did this as well. My method is good if you are going to be color correcting in FCP before you output to tape, for it is better to color correct in a 10-bit codec than the DVCPRO HD codec.

I’ve got a project similar to this (720p must be converted to 1080i for output).

I was wondering if you could go through the steps you used to output to 1080i on the fly through the Kona3. I’ve made the adjustments under the “digital out” tab in the kona software, but I’m still getting a weird quad split-like output of footage, a green screen and some other extraneous junk.

Is FCP still set up for 720p? It should be. Only the Kona 3 should be set to output at 1080i.

Yeah, sequence is 720p 59.94, Kona3 set to output to 1080i. I can hear the audio on my output deck, and even routed into an Avid suite I can hear it, but for video all I’ve got is bars coming to my output destination(s).

Thanks for your help. After poking around a lot we were able to finally make it work. Key was in FCP a/v settings to have video playback at 720p. I had it at 1080i. I appreciate your advice.
