Converting 29.97fps ProRes clip to 23.98 for multiclip
Hi everyone. I recently shot an event in HDV and converted it to ProRes on capture. My intention was to shoot in 24fps with both cameras. I shot in 24F mode on my XH A1. However, though i was under the impression i was shooting in 24fps on the Sony HDV camera, the frame rate in FCP revealed it was 29.97.
So, i need to convert the 29.97 material to 23.98 like the XH A1 material. However, in Compressor when i try to change the frame rate to 23.98, the result is 23.976. will FCP accept that when i try to create a multiclip sequence? what am i missing?

Your method will work, but it might look funny. (23.976 is the real frame rate for 23.98. APple abbreviates 23.976 to 23.98. If you want to get really technical the frame rate is 1001/24000).
My suggestion would be to capture the 23.98 material with 3:2 pulldown so that your footage is 29.97. This will yield better results as going 29.97 to 23.98 can look weird unless all you are doing is removing pulldown.

I’m trying to setup to capture the 23.98 material with 3:2 pulldown… but how exactly does one initiate that process? Just to be clear, i have an easy setup for HDV to ProRes. Can you outline the process for me… i don’t want to waste another 7hrs using compressor if i don’t have to.

just a simple setup: canon xha1 via FireWire to MacBook Pro. External fw drives from there.. I have final cut studio 2.
I shoot in hdv and usually convert to prores on the fly through a custom easy setup preset. Typically I would shoot in 24f mode, but I mistakenly shot in 60i on one of the cams.

I’m not super sure, but there has to be a way to output 60i out of the firewire. I do not know the camera well enough to help there. I am sure it’s buried in the menus somewhere.
