What is the best way to convert a 23.98 timeline (actually 24p) to a 29.97 timeline and keep the same length (24 minutes and 46 seconds)?

    Hmmm…

What I’d do… I’d set my RT to play back at 3:2 and lay it off to tape and then import it back in at 29.97.

What I’d do if I ever wanted it back at 24… I’d set my RT to play back at 2:3:3:2 and lay it off to tape.

What I might try… Dropping in into a 29.97 timeline and see what happened (might be ugly and random)

Then I might try… Looking at Cinema Tools and see if it will ADD telecine (don’t think it does though)

What I’d hope… That someone smarter than both of us has a better idea.

    Good luck,

If output to tape w/Kona card is not an option, Compressor’s retiming controls in the Frame Controls can do this.

What would you suggest if the workflow was FCP through an AJA Kona video card to a beta SP deck?

To output directly from the card, and let the card handle the conversion. This is done in the Kona Control Panel.

Must this be done from the timeline or can I export to a quicktime movie, open the movie in fcp and then through Kona?

You just do it through the Kona…

You output to tape (at 29.97) using the Kona and then recapture.

You can do it in software using Compressor, but the encode time is lengthy.

What preset do I use in Compressor to maintain full quality?

[jack fox] “What preset do I use in Compressor to maintain full quality?”

I wouldn’t use Compressor or After Effects. It does all kinds of heavy processing you don’t need or want. All you want is to add pulldown and nothing else. Use the Kona, or if you must use software then use Nattress Film Converter.

For removing pulldown, always use Cinema Tools.

My captioning house has a Kona, but I do not and from what I understand the conversion can only be done from the fcp timeline segment(s) and not from an exported quicktime movie file. This being true, I will need to use software. Use “Nattress Film Converter,” is that the same as the software product called “Standards Converter V2.5 by Graeme Nattress?” Thank you.
