Converting 16:9 to 4×3

Drop the finished 16:9 master into a 4:3 timeline and increase the scale until it fills the frame. Render and export. I would use a Prores 4:3 timeline.

Note: There is no such thing as 4:3 HD…so the timeline will pretty much have to be SD.

Sorry…I guess I assumed they knew that Shane 🙂 But yea…that’s why I suggested Prores…at least it’ll be better than NTSC.

Haven’t shot it yet. Was considering just shooting the 42 spots all in SD and call it a day but I’m shooting with white background and using luminance key to swap out the white bg with white slug. Works good in HD. Not so good in SD.

Really appreciate the advice. Think I want to let their web guys worry about the 4×3 conversion. Knuckleheads. I’m supposed to start shooting tomorrow and they just told me about the 4×3 stuff. Thanks again my friend. I owe you one.

I believe what you are looking for is “Apple ProRes 422 NTSC 48 kHz”. Once you pick that setting, you should see the frame size of your sequence change to 720 x 486. Good luck!

Yes, you’re in for a world of hurt now.

You want to be hexadecimal compatible (everything divisible by 16) if you want a clean web presence. So you will likely wind up in a 480P format, whatever the pixel aspect ratio might be that you negotiate and finally cram into the “standard” NTSC frame.
