How do I convert a Z Depth Pass from a 3D-application into a Blur Map for After Effects’ Camera Lens Blur-effect?

Right now, the thing that’s the closest to the camera is black and the thing that’s the furthest away from the camera is white in the Z Depth Pass. The Camera Lens Blur-effect wants to use a Blur Map where everything in black is sharp and everything white becomes blurred by 100%. However, the thing that I want to have in focus is somewhere in the middle (around 90 or so in luminance); how do I convert this Z Depth Pass to a useable Blur Map for Camera Lens Blur?

There are controls in the Camera Lens Blur effect for doing everything you’re asking for.
There’s a tick box to invert blur map. And you can adjust the Blur Focal Distance number to make something else be in focus as everything else defocuses.

Thank you! I had completely forgotten about that Blur Focal Distance-setting…
