    Hi all,

not really an after effects question but not sure where to inquire. What do people use to convert videos to .wmv? Im on a mac, and a client is having trouble viewing the .mov (because the quicktime plugin is so hard to install and use…) but a wmv seems to be the lowest common denominator for windows users. I don’t really want to spend the $100 for flip4mac, but can if I have to.

    Any suggestions?

    thanks!

    Hey Aaron,

I think flip4mac is about the only game in town. Certainly the cheapest solution
    at any rate.

that’s what I was afraid of… what about free options to convert on the PC side, ive got one of those here, but haven’t had much luck there either. the converters Ive tried for PC all have a time limit or they watermark the video.

    thanks,

I found an online converter that actually works pretty well, no settings for compression and whatnot, but it adds the critical .wmv extension and seems to work!

    better than paying…

“what about free options to convert on the PC side”

    Microsoft offers three free encoders:

    https://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/forpros/encoder/default.mspx

The Expressions Encoder is the newest and easiest to use of the three. But the series 9 encoders are the most stable, flexible and powerful (IMHO).

    Thanks,

You can convert it to H.264 and play it back with a Flash player like Flowpayer (flowplayer.org). In this way even an .mov file can be played with Flash. One example of this is my latest tutorial, see

    https://preta3d.com/wp/archives/208

If you look at the code of the page you’ll find that the clip’s file is indeed a .mov

Not sure about the conversion settings, ScreenFlow generates the right H.264 automatically but I believe that CS4 does that too.

It’s the best of both worlds.
