    Does anyone know a quick way to convert shape layers to masks? I tried auto trace, and it gives me nasty paths with way too many vertices.

    I tried that, when I paste it on the layer nothing happens. tried copying the path from Contents>Group 1>Path 1 and also Contents>Group 1>Path 1>path. I also tried selecting the 3 vertices from the comp viewer and copying that way, that didn’t work either.

    Dave has given a right method. May be you are skipping some steps.

    1. Copy the Path from Shape Layer.
    2. Create a White solid with comp size.
    3. Make a Rough Mask.
    4. Press MM to twirl down Mask Path parameter.
    5. Select Mask Path and Paste.

    As Vishesh’s answer suggests, most people forget the step of selecting the path property when pasting.
