    Hi,

    I am looking for the best way to convert HD uncompressed 1920 x 1080 25fps to HD uncompressed 1920 x 1080 29.97fps.I have to add those files to a project I am editing with Vegas… does anybody know a simple way to do that? Thank you very much everyonem!!

    Just drop the files into Vegas Pro and use them. There is no need to convert anything. Vegas handles files at different frame rates without a problem. If you feel that you must convert them then you should render the 25 fps file as 29.97 fps using the QuickTime encoder without any codec (i.e., create a custom template and use “None” and the video format) to keep them uncompressed.

    Yes, with absolute perfection.
    Project = 24p
    Audio tab, set Resample quality to Best
    Put 24p clip on timeline, switch T/L ruler to absolute frames, note number of frames at end of clip.
    Change project to 25p, Ctl + drag end of clip until it is exactly the same number of frames long.

    Your clip will now playback at 25fps, your can render it out as 25p or add pulldown to make 50i (PAL) by changing simply to 50i.

    The above is exactly the same as how any movie is broadcast in PAL land. It will be 4% shorter, no one will notice.

    The Elastique pitch shifting now used by Vegas is exceptionally good, arguably the best money can buy so even the audio will be perfect.

    Note, 24p is not that common, most likely your video is 23.97p, doesn’t matter, just match your inital project settings to the media to get it right.

    I did the following: I filmed the highway at 24P (as Bob says, it is actually 23.97).and followed the instructions, everything clear to me. Rendered to 1080/ 50i and to 720/25p

    Then I compared the original clip w the converted on my PAL TV. The original showed jerky cars, flowing and then kind of stopping and then going on etc.

    The converted copies showed no stopping but some “ghosts” appearing now and then behind or before the cars. 25p looked better than 50i. Is this to be expected or maybe id didn’t do the conversion carefully enough?
    Another clip taken directly at 1080i w the camera was the smoothest.

    Yea, but he’s going the other way from 50i to 60i.

    Make sure you ARE resampling!!! Where do you think the extra frames are going to come from if you don’t blend the existing 25 frames to create 30?

    Hi John,
    I simply followed the directions in the original SCS Forum post and as far as I was concerned the resulting video was OK. The key seemed to be in using absolute frames. I would not expect extra frames to be created or discarded. Depending on which way you are changing here will be a ‘slo mo’ or ‘speed up’ of around 20%. Visually this may not be noticed but the change in audio pitch could be un-acceptable. For my purpose the audio was not required.
    The next time I use this method I’ll try with re-sampling on & off.

    Perhaps I should now refrain from posting.

    In the case of going from a faster frame rate to a slower frame rate, there are times when you simply want to drop the unneeded frames which is why people will recommend turning resample off. This can also cause jerky movement depending on how much motion is in the scene so it’s never an absolute recommendation and always based on the footage. I can show you dance footage that looks jerky when going from 29.97 to 23.96 with resample off, but is silky smooth motion with resample on. You have to test it out and see which way looks best.

    When going from a slower frame rate to a faster frame rate as in this thread, you must have resample on so that new frames are created or else your timing will change which is almost always undesirable when it’s as large as 20%. This is done all the time by Hollywood when going from 24p film to 29.97 for TV broadcast and is called Telecine. This process can either interpolate frames or duplicates frames in a pattern like 3:2, 2:3, or 3:2:2:3. Because TV is interlaced, it can even split the frame into fields and blend the fields from two different frames.

    So there are lots of methods for changing frame rates. I just didn’t want the original poster to think that disabling resample is always the answer. It is not.

    Thanks for taking the time to explain ‘rate changing’. Vegas does seem to do a reasonable job and your methods most certainly work and return clips identical in length to the source.
    My usual source of NTSC comes on tape from friends with two HC3 camcorders one of which was purchased in NTSC land. The tapes I receive are often mixed PAL & NTSC material hence my interest in creating a common standard for the timeline. Vegas accepts mixed material so perhaps I am over reacting in trying to establish a common standard. In the past if have changed rate via frameserving and avisynth . Hence my interest in quicker/easier routes

    If you’re working in PAL I would just keep your project as PAL and drop the NTSC footage on the timeline and let Vegas sort it out. Most of the time it will do the right thing.
