  • Convert Polygon objects to Spline?

Posted by Freddie Hill on August 9, 2011 at 5:35 am

    Hello.
I was wondering if anyone knows how to convert a polygon to a spline object?
    I’m using Cinema4d 11.5

My problem is that i imported splines from illu to make a shape but converted one of them into a polygon object (The polygon i accidently made says the previous spline name, but the symbol has converted and it has a dropdown menu with 2 caps and a rounding contained inside)
Now i want to make all those polygons back into a spline like the rest of everything i imported from illu.

I’m quite new to Cinema4d, so sorry if that explanation of my problem sounds a little ‘noobish’ 😀

Any advice would be very appreciated!

I did not get what you wrote there but here is how to get a spline from a polygon object.

-Select the edge you want to convert to a spline.
-On the top bar menu select STRUCTURE
    -Select EDIT SPLINE
    -Select EDGE TO SPLINE

it will appear as a child of the object.

you accidentally made an Extrude editable I think, if you can’t reimport the spline from Illustrator then Randy’s method is the way to go

    Thankyou, that worked a charm.

I’m having trouble getting back to the shape of my original extruded spline though.

My old extruded spline was a basic oval shape extruded by ExtrudeNURRBS at about 20m.

When i select all the edges of one of the Caps polygons (the front side of my previous extruded spline), convert through ‘edges to spline’ and then re-extrude using extrudeNURBS by 20m i get a 3d-looking 2d image.
Here is a link of what i mean:

(i panned the camera angle to show how it’s not 3d)

Could you please share some advice on what i have to do to get the spline to extrude just out into 3d space and not out and up like in the picture?
I hope that i make sense this time 🙂

your spline is rotated around so it’s long dimension is lined up with the Z-axis so the Extrude set to 20 in the Z-axis just makes that 2-D thing. Change the Extrude to be extruding in X instead (in the Movement setting)

    Aha, fixed.
Wasn’t that exact problem but similar. The spline created was created with the original polygon rotation settings, and it was rotated 90′ which made it flat when an extrudeNURBS was added to it.
    Silly mistake on my part.
    Thankyou for the help!
