  • Convert Mov file to something FCP can recognise?

Posted by Ravi Kanda on August 24, 2010 at 8:03 pm

    Hi guys

What is the best way to convert a mov file to avoid major compression issues? I’d like either Mpeg or Avi.

FCP does not import mov files so how could I do this?

    Thanks!

FCP only supports mov (Quicktime) files. And only mov files that are of certain codecs designed for editing. Not mpeg, or h.264 for example.

Look at the list of easy setups. you want to convert your footage to match one of those.

Please tell us the nature of the files. Let me guess, 5D? 7D? T2i?

The mov file displays as Unrendered and does not play. Again, I’m posting this message on behalf of somebody else.

Is it as simple as rendering the whole mov file if it displays ‘unrendered’?

You have to tell us where the files originate from.

It’s a video we got made by an editor. All I want to do is change the audio and add a logo towards the end.

    Is that what you mean?

[Ravi Kanda] “Is that what you mean?”

It’s closer. Do us a favor and open the movie in Quicktime, then hit command-i to being up the info.

What does it say for format?

    It says:

    Format: Apple Animation, 720 X 486 (648 X 486), Millions
16-Bit Integer (Big Endian, Mono, 44,100 KHz

    FPS: 29.97

    Data Size: 5.92 Gb

    Everything ok there?

Yes, this helps tremendously. Animation is not a codec that FCP can handle in real time. You have a couple of choices.

You can transcode that movie to something more FCP RT friendly (like ProRes) and then bring that transcoded file in to a ProRes timeline and you won’t have to render.

    or

simply add your current file to a ProRes timeline with matching frame size and frame rate, and add your new end tag. This will still have to render.
