  • Convert Flipcam Footage to MOV First?

Posted by Lillian Young on March 28, 2010 at 2:39 am

A client gave me Flipcam videos, and I’ve managed to get them into FCP 7 as mp4 files. However, before cutting, I wonder if I should just convert the footage to mov to avoid any problems. The conversion will take a long time, so I was trying to avoid it, but I may not be able to.

    What do you think?

It must be converted first. Just do it overnight and charge for your time. The choice is to do this in the beginning on your own terms or at every turn in the editing process.

I agree with Michael. Convert the files first so your editing process runs with less render time. MPEG Streamclip is a great&free conversion application.

    Hope this helps!

Thanks – I converted all clips, re-loaded one and it’s still stuttering during playback, which makes editing difficult.

Not sure what I’m doing wrong.

e.g. I put a mov clip on the timeline, pres the space bar to play it. It plays, then near the end skips.

I’ve tried 3 different settings under RT
Full Quality, Use Playback Settings and Play Base Layer Only

    Footage:
    MOV
    Compression: None
    1280×720

Mac Pro – OS X Leopard

    ***UPDATE***

I changed the None compression to ProRes 422, and made sure that the sequence in FCP was ProRes 422. This seems to work with one small clip, meaning that now, the clip plays back smoothly and exports smoothly.

I’m going to re-export the other clips the same way.
