  • convert 2D pic into 3D object?

Can’t find an easy way to convert a multiple-angle 2d pic into a 3d object … is this possible in core? If not, any plug-INS that can do a reasonable job?

    Thanks Rob

The only way to do it in Cinema is to use the pics as reference and model it by hand.

There are a few programs out there that can produce models from photos, but the models are generally low quality and rely on camera projection to produce an arguably useable result.

You can do something similar in Cinema by modeling a rough approximation of the object and then using camera projection to place the photos as textures.

I’m working with fairly simple green screen pics (padlock). Surprised no one has a quality plug-in to do this – doesn’t need to be perfect, a little touch up would fine – big time saver.

I guess this isn’t a common feature request or process people do much??

It’s not a request I’ve heard before and there’s no reason I can think of that it would have to be done in Cinema vs. a separate application like https://www.photomodeler.com/index.htm

I don’t know Adam, seems like a perfect fit for Cinema 4D, heck even the feature list in PhotoModeler lists NURBS, Lines, edges, curves, cylinder, shape marking tools … pretty much what’s already in C4D. Seems like a perfect plug-in for C4D to me?

Perhaps … just saying that I don’t see the advantage to having it as a plugin vs. a separate application. Why reinvent the wheel?

Well one reason is why pay for parts of the wheel one already has in C4D? PhotoModeler is $1000-$3500 — if anything, it seems more like a competitor to C4D. C4D plugins range from $50-$600 … so there’s the reason, cost!

Given that PhotoModeler exists as a product (thank you for sharing that link), there does indeed seem to be a market place for 2D to 3D conversions.

Extending on this … 3D cameras (both still and motion) along with cameras that can provide image depth data seems like it’s going to get popular.
