  • Convert 16:9 video to 4:3 in Vegas

I have searched everywhere for this and cannot find a solution:

I taped a project this weekend in HDV (16:9) format this weekend by mistake. The bulk of the remainder of my project is in 4:3 format. I am in a HUGE time constraint and don’t have the time or resources to go back and film again in 4:3.

I have already captured all of my tape in vegas in 16:9 format. Is there a way to change my clips to 4:3 format in Vegas? I am really under the gun here and would appreciate anyone’s prompt and helpful response.

    Thank you so much!!!!

BTW I am using vegas 8

I think that if you set up your project settings at 4:3 and drop your 16:9 footage on itand then use conform to project settings (or whatever the wording is) you can use it. You might have to use track motion to move the part of the 16:9 image you want visible into the field.

If you’re under a time constraint and have a bunch of individual clips, I would start the trial of Excalibur https://www.jetdv.com/excalibur/faq.php

Drop the clips in the timeline, select all the 16:9 clips and load up Excalibur. Go to the Event tab and at the bottom click Match Aspect. This will crop every clip to the center 4:3. You can move it left or right in Event Pan/Crop in the timeline.

When you have time check out some of it’s other features. I use Match Aspect so much I have it bound to Alt+M because I work with a lot of scanned jpeg’s.

Just as Terry Esslinger said: Open a 4×3 project and drop in the 16×9 footage and automatically you get a black border on top and bottom.
If you want your 16×9 fill the 4×3 screen, GO:
event pan/crop (small square on right of the videoclip) ->
open Preset(near top) -> choose 4×3. This will zoom your 16×9 to 4×3.

Thanks for your help. I did as John said and used event pan/crop, opened Preset, Chose 4×3. And it did indeed zoom my video from 16×9 to 4×3. Project says 720×486. Only problem is when I render to QT, I get black bars on either side (like the 4:3 video’s not filling the screen). Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

Instead of using the 4:3 preset, right-click and select Match Output Aspect. This will guarantee no black bars as long as you render to the same resolution.
