convert 1080/25p to 1080/50i?
Hi everyone, I hope I can get some advice.
I’ve shot my footage with Panasonic AG102 as 1080/25p. To work in FCP, the footage was converted to Prores 1080/25.
However my delivery to the broadcaster should be 1080/50i. How do I turn 25p into 50i? Do I just edit my footage in a 50i sequence? Does this mean the resulting file will be 50i with a progressive look?

Yup. That’s what you do. 25p in a 50i sequence. And it’ll be progressive in look. Can’t change that.

Thanks Shane. Problem is I’ve already edited a bunch of sequences in 25p. I tried cutting and pasting the footage into a 50i sequence but all the edit points were off.
Aside from re-editing everything in a 50i timeline, is there any other way?

Hi Ming,
Someone feel free to correct me, but for me delivering to bbc etc its as simple as:In your FCP sequence, change the field settings to ‘upper’, rather than ‘none’. None is progressive, upper is interlaced. It shouldn’t affect anything in your sequence with regards to timings. You will notice the difference on rendered speed changes and graphics moves. As shane said, your progressive shot footage will still look progressive.

Thanks Nick. But wouldn’t the framerate still be 25? I’m delivering 50i.

50i is still 25fps. It’s just interlaced. 50i means 50 interlaced fields…Two fields per frame…50 fields per second…25fps.

+ I continue to work on 1080/25 sequence with field set to upper.
+ To deliver an XDCAM mxf @ 1080/50i, I export my sequence with the setting: xd cam hd 422 1080i50.Will there be issues with the video?

50i doesn’t mean the frame rate is 50 frames a sec. It is still 25 frames a sec, its just that each frame has 2 fields, hence the feeling of a slightly smooth ‘soap opera’ style feeling to the movement of interlaced footage. But it is still 25fps. Don’t deliver to the bbc as 50fps or you will get it back for redelivery pretty quickly!
