I have 8 hours of footage from a project I am doing. It is in SD and uploads to the rate of about 13GB per hour. My hard-drive isn’t big enough to handle all this. Would it be advisable to input the footage in a smaller compressed form. (I’m using 720 x 480 NTSC now) or take the uploaded footage and run it through compressor as an mp4? (Which gives me about an 85% decrease in file size with its current settings) I’d like to know what is the best way to deal with using this footage with the least amount of decreased quality.

For EDITING? You are using one of the smallest compressed formats there is. DV is REALLY SMALL in relation to all the other formats. 8 hours at 13GB…that’s 184GB. You can get an internal 1TB (1000GB) drive for about $80 (install directly into a MacPro). You can get an external 500GB firewire drive for $140:

Don’t compress the files. Get a bigger boat…er…drive.

I’m doing these videos for free so I don’t want to spend money for a new hard drive…..also….I don’t have a lot of money…but maybe I will get one anyway
