controlling highlights
so i gather with highlights a seperate pass is the way to go.
is there any way to control the spazzy flickery-ness of the highlights. i have them popping a little more than i would like…

What do you mean by flicker? Frame-by-frame irregularities in your specular highlights? If so, turn off the auto-light/ auto exposure option in the render settings.
