control text with expression
Posted by Alex Harding on November 28, 2006 at 4:06 pmis it possible to create a text layer that updates dynamically via expressions?
i know how to make number values appear in the comp in this way, using the “numbers” effect, would like to do the same with actual letters
cheers

November 28, 2006 at 4:27 pmIf the changes are from rando to text, then you don’t need an expression. Add a text animator and use the character offset.

November 28, 2006 at 11:47 pmsorry, i didnt make it clear,
i wanted the actual content of the text to be defined via expressions depending on various paramaters related to other elements in the comp -

i already have expressions that calculate distance values and values based on rotation of certain objects relative to the camera and so on. i want diferent words to appear based on the conditions defined by the other vaules, i guess using if and else logic.
i (thanks to this forum) managed to get the number effect to generate a dynamic counter that can display these values in the comp.
all i really want to know is whether there is a way to control the content of the normal text via expressions; with the numbers one its obvious where to put the expression because the value is keyframable anyway. with the text one i can see no place for the code, though i vaugely remember reading another thread where someone had done it.
am i on the wrong track altogether?
thanks for your responses,
Alex
