Recently, I learned about the control surfaces for final cut pro. After some research, I discovered the Mackie Control Universal Pro. For those of you who have tried it (with Final Cut Pro 6), what was your experience with it. As a video editor on final cut, it sometimes gets become a pain in the butt when it comes to audio tweaking, especially when working with multiple audio tracks. I was thinking that once I have the money saved up, that the Mackie Control Universal Pro would be a smart buy to add on to my editing gear. What can you guys say? Thanks.

    Well, it works…

It adds the ability to control levels on more than one track at a time, something you can’t do with a mouse… I’m also looking at adding a panel for Color… same reason.

How about the extra buttons on the control surface? The device was designed more for dedicated audio editing programs like Sonar. Is there any way to reprogram those for final cut? For example, reprogram them to call up the different tools (blade, pen, roll, etc.)? Or since I do event videography, can I reprogram those extra buttons for a multi-camera sequence edit? Thanks

Not sure.. only time I’ve used it was at a trade show. Might email them and ask?

Check out Euphonix control surfaces – Artist series.

I don’t know how well it works, but it sure looks good.

I have the Mackie control surface.

You can use it to control level and pan. The mute and solo buttons, and the transport controls (including the jog wheel) work as well.

The rest of the buttons, as far as I’ve been able to learn, have no function within FCP.

Can you reprogram the buttons to perform other commands?
based on this picture: https://www.mackie.com/home/showimage.html?u=/products/mcupro/images/MCU-Pro-Top.jpg there seems to be a ton of buttons which seem un-related to final cut. for $1300, i would sure love to be able to make those work to fit my needs.

Not as far as I know. I think these buttons work in several other programs, including logic, and you can get lexan overlays to indicate what the do in any particular program. But not for FCP.

I’d love to be proven wrong about any of this. I wish the board had more functionality within FCP.

You might want to look into other brands of control surfaces. Behringer makes one that’s only $200. It works, but the faders make lots of noise as they fly around. I also hear Tascam has a good model that includes mic inputs with phantom power.
