I need a piece of software (or hardware) that will allow me to control the timing of video that will be projected on a screen behind performers. We have broken the film into segments for each musical piece that is going to be performed but I would like to be able to speed up or slow down the clip in real time depending on the speed the performers go through the segment.

At least I would like to be able to fade out a clip early and go to the next clip if the performers end before the planned ending of the video.

Any way to do this with software on a Mac? PC? Hardware?

    Any help is appreciated.

Google for VJ software. There are lots out there, and a few would probably do what you want.

I just googled and found AVMixer Lite a freeware VJ software that will do what you require:
    – Mac or PC
    – speed control via a slider for video
    – mix A/B videos/audio with a fader
    – non-sequential playlist, so highly controllable as to what you want to be played next
    – easy to learn and use. IMHO productive in 5 minutes!
    – free
