    hi

i’ve just imported footage from a wedding i filmed recently

i used 2 tapes, and have found a profound difference between the footage

1st tape : appears balanced and even, with a ‘letterbox’ (top & bottom banner) framing, like a movie

2nd tape : without this framing, appearing to fill the entire screen, with a slightly ‘squashed’ look

i’ve managed to stretch this out by holding down a corner and literally stretching to a similar rectangle

    i film using a Sony Z1 –

    a) can anyone tell me if there’s an easier way to automatically correct the squashed footage ?

    b) can anyone please tell me how this has happened & what i must have done to make this change

    many thanks

To start, read the manual. Both the camera and FCP. Get some education. You simply can not pick up a camera, press record and call yourself a professional.

Practice, practice, practice before recording important events.

Issue: You have two formats of 16:9…letterboxed 4:3 and anamorphic. What I would do, is make the main format the letterboxed format, and adjust the anamorphic to fit. Otherwise you are blowing up the letterboxed footage by 33% and it looks HORRID.

    hello Shane

    thanks for that, very helpful

i will do that in future

i was just wondering what must of happened between switching the tapes

as the first one was spot on, and the next was differently formatted

    thanks again

The only thing I can think of, is if you possibly switched it over within the menu of the camera in between tapes. Those menus can be fairly deep so it’s not likely, but certainly not unheard of. Likewise, what FCP settings did you use to capture? Are you editing in HDV, or did you bring it in as DV? It’s entirely possible that the footage on the tapes are fine and match each other correctly, but they were brought into FCP incorrectly.

I’m not familiar with the Z1’s menus, so unfortunately I can’t tell you specifically in what menu to look.

hello & thank you very much for that, Richard

i will take a look at the menu once again

and pay particular attention to the FCP importing options

    thanks

[Shane Ross] “What I would do, is make the main format the letterboxed format, and adjust the anamorphic to fit.”

I would do the same. Just leave the other footage alone and when you bring in the 16×9 footage (the full frame stuff) you can change the aspect ratio under the motion tab to -33. This will squish down the footage 33% on the y-axis. It should match the other letterboxed footage you have.

You will need to render this footage eventually, but you should be able to work with it in real time until the final layoff.
