Content problem (SMI, XML, MP4)
Hi,
I got some footage from a colleauge who got it from a colleauge etc… which I am supposed to edit..
for every clip there is an extra folder containing a mp4, a smi, a xml, a bim and a ppn file.
the mp4 won’t open in any player and I have no Idea what the others are..
could it be some xdcam footage somebody just dragged on the hard drive without properly “running it through” an importing program??
anyways I would appreciate your help!

Sounds about right, it should be XDCAM. The common workflow is to copy the full contents of the card as those additional files are metadata that some workflows take advantage of.
In Premiere go to Window > Media Browser, navigate to your footage folder and drag-n-drop from the media browser. This is the proper way to import some card-based footage like XDCAM and AVCHD. If you are coming from Final Cut, it isn’t like a log and transfer workflow.

Paul, that sounds like exactly what someone did – grab all the files from an XDCam volume.
If they don’t give you the folder structure exactly like it was on the card?
Yeah, that’s a problem. You can’t play the MP4 back “in any player” because you don’t have licenses for the XDCam codec for QuickTime (I’m just picking QuickTime as an example.)
VLC player *should* play it.
In CS6 Bridge should play it.
And you should try the MP4 in Adobe Premiere Pro – it may be fine there.
