    Hi

    Firstly I know this has been discussed at length on here and I have searched and read all I can find.

    however.

    I have pre comp 3d layers with all the layers therein also 3d
    I have three lights casting shadows and all materials at all levels of the project set to recieve and cast shadows, when I fold(rasterize) my comps the shadows disappear.

    the lighting info is still working.

    I’m left with a choice good quality no lights or nicely light but a bit soft

    have I missed something ?

    are the lights in the main comp or the precomp?

    when you enable collapse transformations for a precomp with 3d layers, the lights (and camera) in the precomp are ignored. only the lights (and camera) in the main comp are used.

    if that’s not it, what version of ae do you have and do you have the latest update for that version?

    i have cs4 and 5 and haven’t been able to recreate the problem in either…

    setup:
    1 – nested comp containing 3d layers setup to cast shadows on one another, collapse transf. enabled
    2 – additional 3d layer set to receive shadows from nested comp layers.
    3-5 – a few lights set to cast shadows.

    everything appears as it should in this simple setup.

    Hi Kevin,

    I’m have AE cs4 9.0.3.8,

    my setup (it’s a pack shot)

    I have seven pre comps each containing layers that make up the packs.

    The seven pre comps are moving from a line to a staggered V formation away from camera and the light is in front so the packs cast shadows on each other as they move behind. the lights and cam are in this comp also when I constantly raz(collapse trans) the lights still do there magic but the shadows disappear. ?

    the only way i can replicate what you describe is if i only have shadow casting/accepting on for the precomps in the main comp but i don’t have those enabled for each 3d layer in each precomp… did that make sense?

    if you go into your 7 precomps, select all the 3d layers, twirl down material options and make sure that cast shadows and accept shadows is on for all 3d layers within each precomp. those setting for the precomps themselves don’t matter when collapse tranformations is enabled.

    Yeah I have all the set to receive and cast shadows. It’s very odd! Because I had to hit dead line I remade the shot with the drop shadow effect. When I have some time I’ll start a fresh comp and try it again. Thanks for having a look. Cheers

    the only other things i can add for when you troubleshoot is i’m using a mac (osx 10.5.8) and i keep opengl off for previews.

    Osx 10.6 here and yes open GL off true sign of a professional. 🙂

    I think the best way to try and solve this problem would be for you to upload the problematic project. Of course you should replace any identifying source layers (package ‘textures’) with solid layers, and ‘Reduce Project’ with the problematic comp selected.

    Shadows should work if everything is set up properly.
