First of all, thanks again to all the mentors who patiently put up with my inexperience approaches through the process of mastering the fcp. Thanks for your time.

After a few weeks of battling with this big multi format family video sequence (sources coming from video cameras, still cameras, photos…) I know have my first 4 hours rough sequence. My sequence settings are:

    720×480 – 29.97 – dv/dvcpro-nt – 48khz – 32 bit – ntsc – ccir 601 – lower (even)

I tried to optimize the settings using all the good advise you gave me and now I have a sequence that doesn’t need render and plays fairly well.

My question: Is there a way to now consolidate this sequence and delete the unused media from the original clips? I like to do that to free up space and to have the sequence media all in one location. I won’t be going back to the original clips since I have all I need in this first rough cut. I tried the posts about the media manager but I still don’t see how it works clearly. It looks as it can only move the whole original clip even though I just need a part of it.

    The very best,
    PC

Pedro if you have a look at the Media Manager you will see a few checkboxes dealing with deleting unused media and excluding unused clips. In the dropdown menu select Copy. Look at the green bars on the top to verify if things go well. The Media Manager is FCP’s weak spot but for your request it does a proper job.

    Gracias Jaap,

I’ve been reading a lot of the posts about it and found interesting information. I’m happy to know that this option is improving and it’s a fact that some big reality shows are using FCP and that probably means the media management is at a workable stage. Actually that takes me to another question, What’s the media sever of preference for FCP?

Someone told me once that there are shows on FCP that use Unity (avid server) as their media server because the one apple makes is not reliable, is that a fact or a bogus comment?

    best,
    PC

I have heard the same story in my area but I can’t tell if it’s fact or fiction – being a one man business I use neither of them.
