  • Connecting HDMI cables to G5

Posted by Samahcinema on September 18, 2007 at 7:34 pm

I would like to connect my PowerMac G5 to a 1080i HDTV, and I have heard that an HDMI cable can connect a G5 to it.

Is that true? Is there an HDMI connection on G5’s that I’ve overlooked? And if there is and it does work, does anybody have any suggestions about cable might be best for this connection?

    Thanks so much,
    Samah

No computers that I know of have a direct HMDI output. That is not a computer connection, but rather one from DVD players and digital receivers to HDTV sets. So no, the Mac does not have one built in.

And you have a PowerMac G5…which means that you have PCI-X slots…so the Decklink Intensity card will not work for you. That is a PCIe card that installs inside a Quad or Intel mac and had HDMI in and out. And the other Decklink options have HDMI as well, but ALL of the options are PCIe.

You might be able to find a DVI to HDMI adapter out there somewhere. I’m sure they exist.

    Samah,

There are DVI to HDMI adapters, but its just the same old story of trying to get a real broadcast video signal out of a card intended for display on a computer monitor. Sure, it will display video, but its just not the right kind of video.

Its obvious from your numerous posts lately that you have really been wracking your brain to get a proper HD signal out of your G5 to an HD monitor. Try as you may, you’re simply going to have to buy a real video card or that Matrox MXO that Shane keeps pitching.

I’d advise you to get a used Blackmagic Extreme HD, it will be the least expense PCIx card available. Here’s one on Ebay… https://cgi.ebay.com/Blackmagic-Decklink-HD-Pro-Dual-Link-4-4-4-PCI-X_W0QQitemZ290160979056QQihZ019QQcategoryZ21166QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Samah can you confirm if you have pci-x or pci-e slots?
You might have some more options.

There was a late batch of G5 duals & quads that have pci-e.
I have 3 G5 duals and a quad and they all have it.

Lot’s of newer computers (PCs not Macs) have HDMI instead of DVI.

They’re essentially the same thing (DVI is limited to 8-bit and carries no sound). Both are 100% forward and backward compatible with each other. You just need a cheap adapter. At my place our G5’s are located in a machine room. We use 50ft. HDMI cables w/ boosters to connect them to the edit bays.

Samah, go to monoprice.com and buy a DVI to HDMI adapter and/or cable. The adapters are like $5 there.

Keep in mind this is for your computer desktop display, and you’ll be limited to “Cinema Display Mode”. This does not give you a broadcast quality playback. You need a Kona or Blackmagic for that. As mentioned by these guys, if your G5 supports PCI Express, you can get a Blackmagic Intensity card.

I don’t think I have that in my G5… I checked in the ‘About this Mac’ but it didn’ say anything about either… Thank you for the thought though.

[Borjis] “Samah can you confirm if you have pci-x or pci-e slots?”

Currently, the Intensity card won’t work in a G5 with PCIe slots, so it’s not an option anyway.

Blackmagic says that the PowerPC PCIe systems will be supported in the future for the Intensity cards, but who knows when that will be. I believe they’re saying it’s an Apple issue that needs to be resolved.
