  • connect external TV monitor to play back FCP stuff?

    Posted by Keely72 on November 6, 2006 at 3:40 am

    I have Final Cut Pro HD and i used to have it hooked up so playback in the Canvas also played on a TV monitor. I moved my computer a few months ago and can’t figure how the TV was hooked up to the computer for playback. I have the TV monitor hooked up to a Sony DVCAM deck and can playback my miniDV on it, but can’t get anything from the computer to playback. In FCP I used to go to View>External Video>All Frames and then it would playback, but i think i’m missing a connection now.

    Any help would be great. Thanks.

    #8 External Monitor Viewing.

    Shane’s Stock Answer #8:

    A simple path is mac > firewire > camera or deck > rca cables > tv

    Then start up your camera and tv, then open fcp.

    Then go View > External video > all frames
    Video playback should be Apple firewire NTSC (If you are using an NTSC set)
    Audio playback should be Audio follows Video

    Techinially, this should send synched video to your TV

    If for some reason you can’t view your timeline on your external monitor, there are a few things to try:

    1) Make sure that the camera/deck is connected and powered on BEFORE you open FCP.

    2) In the Final Cut Pro menu select AUDIO/VIDEO Preferences and make sure your signal is being sent out thru Firewire DV.

    3) Go to the menu and select VIEW>EXTERNAL>ALL FRAMES.

    4) Click in the % box above the image and select FIT TO WINDOW.

    5) Go to VIEW->refresh A/V devices

    6) Make sure the Log & Capture window is closed

    If you want it to play in both the canvas and the external monitor you need to go to the FINAL CUT PRO menu and select AUDIO/VIDIO settings and make sure MIRROR ON DESKTOP is selected under the PLAYBACK OUTPUT section

    I always troubleshoot the basic setup with iMovie HD – it either works or it doesn’t and you avoid the myriad settings that can make it not work in FCP.

    After you get the setup right:
    Good: Computer -FireWire-> DV-Deck -composite video->Television
    Good: Computer -FireWire-> DV-Deck -stereo audio->Television

    Better: Computer -FireWire-> DV-Deck -S-Video->Television
    Better: Computer -FireWire-> DV-Deck -stereo audio->Amplifier and Speakers

    Best: Computer -FireWire-> DV-Deck -component video->Broadcast-Monitor
    Best: Computer -FireWire-> DV-Deck -stereo audio->Amplifier and Speakers

    Then Shut it all down. Power Up the DV Deck first, then the computer. Run iMovie HD and see if it talks to your deck and can capture and output video. If so, then your FireWire chain is correct. Then run FCP.

    Apart from that, Like What Shane Said.

    With the myriad of settings I find it odd that nobody mentions the easy setups. For DV, to make sure everything is set up correctly, obviously hook up your deck and make sure it’s on and that’s IT’s input is set to DV. Then launch FCP. Then press ctrl+q. Choose the NTSC DV setup. That’ll get you started.

    Thanks Bret and everyone. I changed the DV deck’s input to DV and it worked!! I guess i must’ve done that before but forgotten. Thanks!
