Connect a Reference monitor to After FX? Possible?

Yeah it’s just a matter of going into AE>prefernces>video preview. Then select your device from the drop down menu and bobs your uncle.

I’d recommend a Blackmagic Design Decklink card, they have SDI models for as little as $295, what are you using with Premiere?
I’ve had trouble with two applications fighting for the external monitor but with a single app open it should work fine.

Oh, I don’t use any specefic video card with premiere yet.
I’m still waiting for my new workstation, and so far I’m just using 2 VGA monitors and having my source preview and project window on one, and my timeline on the other.

I heard though that Decklink shouldn’t be that good a choise after all.
The reason he gave me for this, was that Decklink is to unstable. That it would “disapear” from the system and you then would have to reboot. Or at least restart the aplication. Is there anything to this?

My Decklink SP works fine. Sometimes, when I’m running FCP and AE, they fight over the display, but closing one app calms them down.

I haven’t used the decklink cards on the PC that much, we’re mostly Mac here and they work great. Check out the forum here to see what kind of problems people are having, but remember it’s going to be completely biased towards people with problems. The move to PC is relatively recent for them and I’m sure there have been teething troubles but they’re a great company and enable new features all the time.
As far as price goes they can’t be beat as far as I’m concerned. Just out of interest what other cards have been recommended to you?

My Decklink board has performed flawlessly in After Effects. It can be a bit more fiddly with Premiere Pro because it demands a lot more from the system integration and compatibility. But for AE I don’t think there’s any issues with the Decklink series on Windows.

yeah our decklink card works without a hitch as well. The only problems are the ones already listed (when you have Final Cut and AE open at the same time).

I forgot to mension that the Decklink issue is a PC related one.
I was told that the decklink card was dessigned towards MAC and that on the PC it should be unstable.

All you guys with no problems also mention FCP, and that also spells MAC.

Still, I have no first hand knowledge of this. I was only told.

I still recommend posting to the Decklink forum here and see what they say. As I said before we’re mostly mac but my guess is that they’re pretty stable on the PC when using only after effects, Barend’s post was exactly what I expected to hear and is pretty much what we’ve seen on the Mac. I can’t think of anything specific about the card’s hardware that would make them more stable on the Mac than PC.

It’s my understanding that the Decklink cards are much more stable on Windows than they used to be, but as Glenn wrote, try posting on the Decklink COW forum for up-to-date info. Also search there for “PC”.
