  • Confusion About Anamorphic Video and De-Interlacing

    Hey,

I understand that Anamorphic Tools are needed when capturing and doing anything with 16:9 DV footage. What I don’t understand is if and how Anamorphic applies to correctly getting HD Footage onto an SD DVD. Our church has had HD cameras for a while, but we have just recently added the equipment to capture the services at full quality. We were scan converting before, and also had to use a hard disk recorder that wouldn’t let anything over an hour go on 1 disk above SP mode. (Read: Really blah quality!)

We record at 720p60 using two Panasonic 500s and a Panasonic 170. We will continue putting our services on DVDs for sale, which, of course as you know, compresses the footage back down to a 720X480 frame. I will be using DVDSP to build the DVDs.

From Final Cut to Compressor to DVDSP, is there anything needing to be done with Anamorphic or De-Interlacing settings? I was planning on using 16:9 Letterbox inside DVDSP. Anything else I should be aware of, and how does Anamorphic or De-Interlacing apply to my case, if at all? Thanks for your time!

    Agape,

You shot progressive…720p60. So there is no interlacing. You can make DVDs that aren’t interlaced…there are progressive ones too. Look at those Hollywood movies you rent on DVD. They are 24fps and progressive. No interlacing.

Thanks… what about anamorphic? No worries there either?

If you want your DVD to be letterboxed by Compressor, go to the Geometry section and choose a standard 4:3 frame in the Dimensions area and select Preserve source aspect ratio on the Padding section.

But if I want the DVD to remain 16:9, then I just use normal settings in Compressor? Anything special I need to do in DVDSP to have the highest quality SD 16:9 DVD possible?
